Periodontal Laser Surgery in Concord
December 24, 2016
Let’s talk about gum disease. Probably not a topic that typically comes up over lunch with friends, but an important one nevertheless. Research shows that approximately 80 percent of adults in American have some degree of gum, or periodontal, disease. If you have advanced gum disease, Dr. Grossman can perform periodontal laser surgery in Concord to remove the bacteria infecting your gums and promote tissue regeneration.
The Stages of Gum Disease
Fortunately, periodontal laser surgery is not required for all cases of gum disease. The beginning phase of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, which is marked by red and swollen gums that may bleed when you brush and floss your teeth. At this point, the condition may be reversible with a more stringent oral hygiene routine at home. In fact, bleeding gums should not signal you to stop brushing and flossing, but rather increase the frequency to better remove the bacterial plaque that leads to gum disease.
If gingivitis is not stopped, then gum disease can progress to become periodontitis or even advanced periodontitis. At this stage, the bacterial infection begins to weaken and destroy gum tissue and may impact the underlying bone structure. Now, periodontal laser surgery in Concord is the best option for treatment of gum disease and to save your smile.
Periodontal Laser Surgery in Concord
In Concord, LANAP is the soft-tissue laser Dr. Grossman uses to treat gum disease. LANAP is the acronym for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. With LANAP, there is no need for scalpel and stitches during periodontal surgery. Thus, patients experience little if any pain or discomfort during the procedure and the recovery is easier, too.
The Millenium PerioLase® MVP-7™ is the special laser Dr. Grossman uses for LANAP surgery. Dr. Grossman was one of the first Massachusetts periodontists trained, certified, and licensed to perform the LANAP procedure, and one of only 1,400 dentists worldwide certified to perform this technique.
Once the local anesthetic has taken affect, Dr. Grossman uses laser energy to remove bacteria and toxins from inside diseased periodontal pockets while healthy tissue untouched. Once this step is completed, we’ll use an ultrasonic instrument to clear away debris and smooth root surfaces. Then, Dr. Grossman will once again use the Millenium PerioLase® MVP-7™ to disinfect the area and seal blood vessels as well as nerve and lymph tissue, making your recovery far less uncomfortable than with standard gum surgery. This procedure also dramatically reduces bleeding and reduces the risk of post-surgical infection. Finally, any loose tissue is compressed against your teeth and you may be fitted for a bite guard to protect your gum tissue at night and promote tissue regeneration.
